Formulated in 1934, the Social Action program was conceived by Bro. Elmo M. Anderson to focus on improving the general well being of minority groups. Today, Social Action is the heartbeat of our beloved fraternity and we should continue to honor our dear Bro. Anderson through meaningful and measurable activities. Our communities need strong leadership with a clear BOLD vision and message from our great fraternity. We need to continue to be the voice for the voiceless and work in the communities we serve to drive the most impact. We also need to ensure that we have a lens of equity when it comes to the partnerships that we have established. Our Social Action program is segmented into four focus areas: Brotherhood for Justice Reform, Healthy Communities, Safe Communities, and Voting Empowerment. For decades Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity maintained strong relationships with leading community organizations.

The Social Action program of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., was adopted and implemented at the 20th Anniversary Conclave of our great fraternity, which occurred in December of 1934. Created by Bro. Elmo Anderson, the program of Social Action answered the charge to improve the general well-being of the disenfranchised people and to advocate for:
- National and State Legislation for the improved rights of the negro
- Equality of wages and working conditions for Negroes
- Elimination of racial discrimination in Federal, State and Municipal employment
- Equalization of educational opportunities
Today Social Action is the heartbeat and conscious of our brotherhood. Social Action is the vehicle that our brothers use to serve our communities, provide a voice to the voiceless and to employ our community engagement and philanthropic efforts. Social Action is broken down into four distinctive areas of focus which illustrate the breadth and spectrum of topics that this program touches. The four areas of focus are:
- Brotherhood for Justice Reform
- Healthy Communities
- Safe Communities
- Voting Empowerment
